National Press for The Kat’s Meow:
CONCERTS –Old Settler’s Music Festival (’06)
Perhaps the most mesmerizing of these [performances] featured the music
of Slim Richey and The Kat’s Meow. Blending jazz and bluegrass, the
contrast of Kat Edmonson’s seductively sultry vocals and the twang of
Richey’s guitar,
backed up by an upright bass and clarinet, left the audience completely
captivated.
By Annette C. Eshleman, Page 29, Dirty Line #123, August/September 2006.
Old Settler’s Music Festival (’06)
Another group that turned more than a few heads early Sunday with its
seductive sounds was The Kat’s Meow. Slim Richey helped pioneer the
improvisational bluegrass movement with his 1977 classic, Jazz Grass.
Helming the
microphone on top of Richey’ssonic guitar riffs with her smoky vocals was
Kat Edmonson. She
looks like a teenage choirgirl butsings like a seasoned jazz singer of
the ’20s and ’30s. Their
cover of the Peggy Lee classic “Fever” had the crowd hypnotized with
Richey’s twangy guitar
and Edmonson’s commanding vocals.
ABOUT SOME OF SLIM AND MEAUX JEAUX'S BANDS:
DREAM LOVERS:
Featured are torch songs and a variety of great early jazz. The extremely
versatile Sarah Sharp is the vocalist. Sarah won the Best Jazz Singer of
2009, Austin Chronicle Award. Dream Lovers toured Italy in October of ’09.
After returning, Sarah signed on as vocalist for the Jitterbug Vipers.
JITTERBUG VIPERS
This is the band that does Texas Roots Swing. The core trio is guitar,
bass, fiddle and vocal. The /vocalist is Sarah Sharp. “Jitterbug”
–danceable music from the 30s & 40s. “Vipers” – Viper music is a special
kind of swing music from the 30s & 40s which was played and sung by Ella
Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway,
Louie Jordan, Bob Wills and the Ink Spots, to name only a few. Often we're
augmented by drums, horns or piano.
IN THESE SHOES:
Think Classic Jazz & Torch songs. The vocalist is Gaila Kenneally, an
extremely talented and beautiful singer with a marvelous & powerful voice.
At The Elephant Room, Reed’s Super Club, Lamberts or other hot jazz
venues in Austin, Gaila is considered the premier torch singer. Known also
for her great stage presence and great sense of style she is wooing and
wowing audiences at festivals and concerts, private parties, and clubs
across Texas. We can play as a trio but often play with drums flute, bass
fiddle, guitar and vocal.
THE KAT'S MEOW:
You listen to The Kat's Meow and you think you've been transported to a
dim lit nightclub in 1940's Chicago where Billie Holliday and Wes
Montgomery are jamming with Ray Brown and Nat King Cole Period jazz,
swing, whatever you want to call it, it's suave, cool, danceable, hot,
sultry, sophisticated and beautiful. Played by Texans?! Yeah, right! Well
check it out. Close your eyes and you won't believe your ears. Kat
Edmonson, vocals (think Peggy Lee, Julie London, Dinah Washington); and
Slim Richey, guitar (dangerous, virtuosic player); and Francie Meaux
Jeaux, bass fiddle (most solid walking bass).
SLIM RICHEY'S DREAM BAND:
This is the band that does Classic Jazz & Swing. The core group is
guitar, bass and vocal. The vocalist have been Gaila Kenneally, Emily
Gimble, Sarah Sharp, Tameca Jones, Maryann Price, Leeann Atherton, Linda
Sriro, Liz Morphis, Alice Spencer, Julie Lowery and Lady Lacynica. All
five Dream Band albums feature this music. Think Billie Holliday, & Nat
King Cole tunes with a Count Basie style rhythm section done by three
Texans. Influenced by the 40s, dance music and Mexican food. Ahhhh! Often
we're augmented by drums, piano or horns. Look for new CDs soon! The Dream
Band has pretty much been replaced by the Jitterbug Vipers, but the CDs
are still selling and well they should.
YO! GADJO:
This is an instrumental band that does Gypsy Jazz a la Django Reinhardt
and the Hot Club of France with all kinds of modern influences. The core
group is two guitars and bass. The hot lead guitarist is Django Porter.
Often we're augmented by fiddles and sometimes by drums, horn and
vocalists. (GADJO is a word meaning non-Gypsy, not to be confused with
"Got Yo?" as in "Got yo nachos? Them's my nachos, they's not yo's!")
THE JAZZ PHARAOHS:
This is a band that I played with from 1992 till the summer of 2006. We
played New Orleans Jazz. I have some of the albums. Good stuff! When I
can get the CDs I stock them.
